Colorado Springs, CO – March 5, 2014 – Springs Hosting, a Colorado Springs data center and managed IT services company, today announced that the completion of the Statement on Standards for Attestation Engagements (SSAE) 16 Type 2 examinations. SSAE 16 provides Springs Hosting data center customers with assurance of corporate controls, including security and network controls, and validation of Springs Hosting’s commitment to the most stringent standards of operation excellence. The SSAE 16 Type II examinations were conducted over a twelve month period of time from February 1, 2013 through January 31, 2014. Springs Hosting is committed to executing the SSAE 16 Type II examination every year and in fact, Springs Hosting has maintained the SSAE 16 Type II compliance since February 1, 2011 (3 Years).

SSAE 16 is an attestation standard issued by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) that reports on Springs Hosting controls supporting the services provided to customers. Springs Hosting management has developed internal control objectives to support state-of-the-art data center management services that were used to complete the examination. Companies that are compliant-sensitive and may require an SSAE 16 Type II include publicly-traded enterprises, financial firms, and healthcare organizations. The SSAE 16 Type II examination report includes management’s description of Springs Hosting’s systems and the suitability of the design and operating effectiveness of the controls.

What is SSAE 16 Type II examination?

In 1992, the AICPA developed a set of guidelines for evaluating service organizations known as the SAS 70. The SSAE 16 is an enhancement to the SAS 70 and went into effect in June of 2011. The changes made to the standard will bring the US companies up to date with new international service organization reporting standards, the ISAE 3402.

A SSAE 16 report, also known as a SOC-1 (Service Organization Control) report, is beneficial to both the service organization and its clients because it demonstrates that the service organization has implemented effective control objects and activities. The SSAE 16 report can aid the service organization’s clients in completing their own financial audits.

Within the managed hosting and managed services industries, the SSAE 16 Type II report is important for companies who rely on outsourced hosting and data center services. The SSAE 16 report allows hosting companies and data centers to complete one report that all customers use.

The audit continues to benefit many of our customers that are publicly traded companies and institutional organizations that must comply with additional security requirements.

On February 2nd, 2012, Springs Hosting added Stratum 0 devices and Stratum 1 time servers which are available to all colocation customers within the data centers. Our Stratum 0 devices directly synchronize to the correct time (UTC) using GPS transmissions. The Stratum 1 servers deliver the correct time to network devices, servers, and customer equipment. There are also multiple Stratum 2 servers available to customers throughout the Springs Hosting network who do not require +/- 10ms time syncronization.

“Keeping your equipment’s built in time clocks sync’d and especially your network equipment can be crucial to maintaining a smooth operating network.” said Brian Korzen, Systems Administrator at Springs Hosting. “The new additions just give us one more thing to offer to our customers and are especially helpful to our customers utilizing CCTV equipment.”

Time is critical for transactions across computer networks. Many events on the network need accurate time to initiate and control processes, and complete transactions such as authentication. Accurate time for time stamps and log files is also very important for billing systems, network diagnostics, digital forensics, high-reliability databases and process analysis. Yet clocks in electronic devices are not designed for accuracy and can drift by more than an hour in a year. The solution is to always connect your network devices and systems to a server via network time protocol (NTP).

Each VPS server is completely isolated from other servers. Unlike other virtual server systems like openvz that share the same kernel, Xen gives each virtual server its own Linux kernel that has been modified to run on the hosts hypervisor giving customers acces to kernel modules. A crash or a lockup on one virtual server has no impact on other virtual servers running on the same physical hardware. This approach leads to a highly configurable virtual server.

“The new VPS systems include many features that we did not have previously with our previous VPS infrastructure including mobile access via your iPhone and Andriod to control your virtual server.”, said CIO Jeremy Keefe. “The Xen-based systems include capabilities for both Paravirtualization (PV) and Hardware-assisted virtualization (HVM). The machines are running with fixed usage limits, below full capacity on dual 6-core Dell PowerEdge servers running Xen virtulization instances. We have built a very flexible infrastructure with both 64-bit and 32-bit Linux and Windows images available giving our customers complete root / administrator control over their virtual machine. If our customer does not have a systems administrator to maintain their VPS, we also provide one to them as an optional service giving our customers all the tools needed to run their applications successfully.”

“Uptime is the name of the game in our industry and you can never have too much!”, said CIO Jeremy Keefe. “We are always looking for ways to extend the network as our customer base continues to grow. CenturyLink has such a large footprint in the surrounding 13 state region that it was a no brainer for us to bring them on-net with us. We are also the only provider based in Colorado Springs that provides CenturyLink bandwidth directly to our customers.”

Springs Hosting internet bandwidth and IP services use multiple tier 1 providers via BGP4 networking protocol to allow for multiple entry and exit points on the network and complete network redundancy to virtually eliminate network failures. Our state of the art network provides our customers with reliable connectivity and best path routing our the clock. Springs Hosting continues to invest in itself to perpetually improve the network through emerging technologies.

R1Soft’s Continuous Data Protection enables disk-based data protection and disaster recovery for Linux and Microsoft Windows operating systems. It works by reading your hard disk volumes at the sector level and bypasses the file system for the ultimate in performance and recovery. Bare Metal Backups allow Springs Hosting to restore any machine from complete failure of the system to a completely new hardware server. Using end to end strong encryption allows Springs Hosting to leverage the use of R1Soft to remotely backup systems for clients off site in our safe and secure data center.
