Tips to Minimize Spam - Spam Prevention |
|
Unsolicited Email or Junk Email, most commonly referred to as “Spam”, is a growing problem with today’s Internet Email. Once your email address has been added to spam lists it is often sold to other spammers. Spam will only get worse so, the best protection against Spam is prevention.
How do I prevent my email address from being collected by spammers?
- Never give your email out to anyone that doesn’t need it. This is probable the single most effective defense against spammers!
- Try not to use your email to subscribe to mailing lists. A common practice is to have a second free email account like hotmail.com for these risky types of subscriptions.
- Don’t put your email in a public place, like a website. Websites are often scanned by programs written by spammers to collect email addresses. If your email address must be on a website, try to conceal it using JavaScript.
Example:
<script type="text/JavaScript" language="JavaScript"> <!-- emailname = "user"; emaildomain = "mydomain.com" document.write("<a href='mailto:" + emailname + "@" + emaildomain + "'>"); document.write(emailname + "@" + emaildomain); document.write("</a>"); //--> </script>
I already receive Spam. What should I do?
- Create a “junk” email Folder and setup a Message Rule in Outlook that will move Emails that the server tags as “Spam” into this folder. This will separate the majority of your junk email from important email. The junk folder can be reviewed at a later time and its contents purged.
- Do not click on links or pictures in any spam email. This only verifies that your email is legitimate to the spammer. Disable the Preview Pane when using programs like Outlook.
- Never click on the “Remove me from this list” or “Unsubscribe” links in a Spam email unless you are absolutely positive that you personally subscribed yourself to the mailing list. Unfortunately, this is abused and only verifies that your email is legitimate to the spammer.
