"We are excited to have completed the HIPAA compliance report for our data center in Colorado Springs.", said Jeremy Keefe, CIO "Springs Hosting continues to grow it's support for medical based companies and other companies that are required to be HIPAA compliant."

The examination was conducted by an independent service auditor, in accordance with attestation standards established by the American Institute of Certified Pulblic Accountants and, accordingly, included examining, on a test basis, evidence about Springs Hosting's compliance with those requirements and performing such other procedures considered necessary in the circumstances. It was deteremined that Springs Hosting complied with the HIPAA regulation in all material respects.

What does HIPAA AT 601 Compliance mean to me?
This compliance ensures to our customers, that Springs Hosting provides a high availability hosting environment to ensure ePHI accessibility as required. Springs Hosting provides a copy of our HROC (HIPAA Report on Compliance) under NDA.

If your company is storing any sensitive patient information or health records, the data center that hosts your data also needs to follow HIPAA compliance. SSAE 16 Type II Audit Successfully Completed

SSAE 16 AuditedOn February 9, 2012, Springs Hosting successfully completed a Statement for Attestation Engagements No. 16 (SSAE 16) Type II audit formerly known as the SAS 70 audit.   The American Institute of Certified Public Accounts (AICPA) replaced the SAS 70 with the SSAE 16.

An independent service auditor examined the policies and procedures and business processes in place at Springs Hosting from February 1, 2011 - January 31, 2012.  "The auditors spent a considerable amount of time inspecting our data center facility, learning about our procedures and interviewing Springs Hosting Management.", said Jeremy Keefe, CIO  "Springs Hosting is proud to have successfully completed the SSAE 16 Type II audit.  The audit benefits many of our customers that are publicly traded companies and institutional organizations that must comply with additional security requirements. The SSAE 16 audit is also a helpful sales tool for our clients to use for their customers and can be useful for start-ups looking for venture capital, which often has security requirements."

What is SSAE 16?

SSAE 16 Type II Audit CompletedIn 1992, the AICPA developed a set of guidelines for evaluating service organizations known as the SAS 70.  The SSAE 16 is an enhancement to the SAS 70 and went into effect in June of 2011.  The changes made to the standard will bring the US companies up to date with new international service organization reporting standards, the ISAE 3402.

A SSAE 16 report, also known as a SOC-1 (Service Organization Control) report, is beneficial to both the service organization and its clients because it demonstrates that the service organization has implemented effective control objects and activities.  The SSAE 16 report can aid the service organization's clients in completing their own financial audits.

In the hosting and colocation industries, the SSAE 16 report is important for companies who are relying more and more on outsourced hosting and colocation services.  The SSAE 16 report allows hosting companies and data centers to complete one report that all their clients can use.

Stratum 1 Time Servers Deployed

Springs HostingOn February 2nd, 2012, Springs Hosting added Stratum 0 devices and Stratum 1 time servers which are available to all colocation customers within the data centers. Our Stratum 0 devices directly synchronize to the correct time (UTC) using GPS transmissions. The Stratum 1 servers deliver the correct time to network devices, servers, and customer equipment. There are also multiple Stratum 2 servers available to customers throughout the Springs Hosting network who do not require +/- 10ms time syncronization.

"Keeping your equipment's built in time clocks sync'd and especially your network equipment can be crucial to maintaining a smooth operating network." said Brian Korzen, Systems Administrator at Springs Hosting. "The new additions just give us one more thing to offer to our customers and are especially helpful to our customers utilizing CCTV equipment."

Time is critical for transactions across computer networks. Many events on the network need accurate time to initiate and control processes, and complete transactions such as authentication. Accurate time for time stamps and log files is also very important for billing systems, network diagnostics, digital forensics, high-reliability databases and process analysis. Yet clocks in electronic devices are not designed for accuracy and can drift by more than an hour in a year. The solution is to always connect your network devices and systems to a server via network time protocol (NTP).

Springs Hosting Receives Registered Trademark

Springs HostingOn January 10, 2012, Springs Hosting received the registered trademark for service mark Springs Hosting. The service mark is registered for 10 years with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

"While this should have probably been done some time ago, it's better late than never," said Jeremy Keefe, CIO at Springs Hosting. "The primary reason for a registered trademark is to protect the brand name so that our customers can be assured that they are doing business with the one and only Springs Hosting rather than someone imitating the company brand."

Why should you get a registered trademark for your business?

Registering your mark allows you to stop anyone who attempts to use or register a similar mark. A registered national trademark holder has priority nationwide when there are any conflicts between businesses with the same or similar names. Five years after a registration, a trademark automatically becomes incontestable, eliminating nearly any trademark infringement defense.

If someone tries to register a domain name that infringes on your trademark, you may be able to shut down the website based on your trademark registration. This benefit makes trademarks important for internet businesses where confusing names could direct traffic away from your website.

Springs Hosting Deploys New Windows Shared Hosting Servers Based on Enkompass by cPanel

Colorado Springs, CO; May 2nd, 2011, Springs Hosting, a leading provider of Managed IT Services for medium to large businesses, announced today that it has deployed Enkompass by cPanel and has officially added the Windows-based hosting product to its growing list of web and email hosting services.

In development for more than a year, Enkompass is built to run on Microsoft Windows Server® 2008 R2 and represents the latest additon to cPanel's growing suite of web hosting control panels and automation solutions, which have previously focused exclusively on Linux - and FreeBSD - based servers.

"We've been working with several windows hosting platforms and selected Enkompass as our primary shared windows platform after several months of testing," said Kelly Karnetsky of Springs Hosting.  "Because our customers are already familiar with the cPanel/WHM interface there is only a slight learning curve for customers that require windows hosting for ASP.NET applications and Microsoft SQL Server 2008.  We would like to thank all of our beta testers for their time and solid testing of Enkompass which has profoundly contributed to its successful launch by Springs Hosting!"

“Microsoft has shown a strong commitment to the hosting industry over the past several years,” said cPanel CEO J. Nick Koston. “Our Windows development team feels that Microsoft IIS7 offers a robust, high-performance web server, with increased security, that the industry will quickly adopt. New VPS Systems Launched

Springs HostingOn April 4, 2011, Springs Hosting launched the new Xen-based Virtual Private Server (VPS) systems.  Pre-existing customer VPS systems have been migrated to the new VPS systems that support both Linux and Windows.  All VPS systems are monitored 24/7 and automatically backed up daily. Each VPS server is completely isolated from other servers.  Unlike other virtual server systems like openvz that share the same kernel, Xen gives each virtual server its own Linux kernel that has been modified to run on the hosts hypervisor giving customers acces to kernel modules.  A crash or a lockup on one virtual server has no impact on other virtual servers running on the same physical hardware. This approach leads to a highly configurable virtual server.

"The new VPS systems include many features that we did not have previously with our previous VPS infrastructure including mobile access via your iPhone and Andriod to control your virtual server.", said CIO Jeremy Keefe.  "The Xen-based systems include capabilities for both Paravirtualization (PV) and Hardware-assisted virtualization (HVM).  The machines are running with fixed usage limits, below full capacity on dual 6-core Dell PowerEdge servers running Xen virtulization instances. We have built a very flexible infrastructure with both 64-bit and 32-bit Linux and Windows images available giving our customers complete root / administrator control over their virtual machine.  If our customer does not have a systems administrator to maintain their VPS, we also provide one to them as an optional service giving our customers all the tools needed to run their applications successfully."

Network Infrastructure Expanded

Springs HostingOn March 30, 2011, Springs Hosting completed installation of two new redundant core routers to increase the internet traffic cababilities beyond 10GigE.  The new routers utilize BGP4 for the multi-homed Springs Hosting data center to maintain redundant failover connections between Tier 1 carriers including Level3 Communications and Qwest Communications.  In addition, Springs Hosting has recently installed three (N+1) APC systems coming online in March 2011 adding to the existing infrastructure to support the growing data center.

"We are continuously improving the fault tolerance within our network to maintain up to 100% network uptime.", said David Rogers.  "To date, we have multiple redundant; routers, switches, power feeds, cooling, monitoring equipment and internet carriers providing a fault tolerant network that our customers depend on to operate their businesses.  Expanding the network is a process that takes planning and foresight. Our objectives have always been to anticipate the needs of our customers and exceed them. By forecasting these objectives, we are able to preestablish network requirements and transparently recover from software and hardware failures to avoid interruptions in services that we provide our customers."
