Here are some additional tips!
- Keep track of your domain names expiration date and keep your contact information up to date! Most lost domains are due to out of date contact information.
- Be aware with who is listed on your contact information! You or your organization should always be listed as the organization and administrative contact.
- Be careful not to use free email addresses from services like hotmail or Gmail as many of these free services require you to login to your account often. Many of these services will deactivate your account after 30 days of inactivity allowing someone else to register your free email address and use this to hijack your domain.
- When possible, place a registrar lock on your domain. This will lock your domain record with that registrar and prevent it from being transferred, modified, or deleted by a third party.
- Do not reply or click on links in any domain related email correspondence you do not recognize. Be very careful not to reply to any official looking renewal notices you receive in the mail from companies you do not recognize. Unscrupulous registrars have been known to submit mass amounts of transfers hoping that a small percentage of confused registrants will accidentally confirm transfers. When in doubt, contact your original registrar to verify any suspicious messages.
- Consider renewing your domain name early and for a longer amount of time. If your domain name is critical to your business and is one that you will want for many years, consider registering if for 5+ year increments.
